Are They confident Enough to Ask?

Are they confident enough to ask?

The family of a girlfriend of mine has sold every possession and moved to California to go to missionary school. Each week I read her blog and am inspired. This week she asked us to think about her daughter who is ten years old and learning to do her studies on line. She said," she isn't confident in her knowledge and isn't yet confident enough to ask for help." I then wondered about our students. Are they confident enough to ask for help? Some aren't. That is why we check in with them each day to make sure they are on track. Are we confident enough to check on them? Sitting beside him/her for a minute to reassure them that they are going to finish, and that they can ask for help anytime. Confidence is a gift some kids have and others are working on. Assisting our students to build self confidence is a skill. Some of us are excellent at this.

  • Logitech cameras will be set up in each location.
  • Zama has a get to know the teacher night on Wednesday at 6:30. If you are looking for excitement come on out!
  • PGP's are due to me right away for professional staff. I have one and am seeking three more. I will me meeting with each person for about a half an hour this week to ensure we are setting you up for success.
  • SLA's are being done with grade three students in Zama this week. Student lea assessments.

  1. When I think of confidence, in myself, my children and our students, I can only think of being comfortable enough to try. To try something new. To try and speak up. To try to ask a question. To try to help. And most of all, to try to be yourself.

  2. I don't completely agree with the quote from Jessica Alba. I think true confidence is when you can put yourself out there and say out loud, to everyone and anyone, "I don't have a clue what I'm doing. Can someone please help me?" Our kids have to do that a lot, and it can be very hard sometimes.

  3. I think confidence is more than the self-assurance you have in your abilities and qualities. It reflects your comfort in everything about yourself. Confidence is something that can come and go through life, but it develops and stays as you learn to know who you are, including your strengths and weaknesses, and the acceptance of who you are and be happy with that. It is part of growing up, for young and old. At the Learning Stores, we can help our kids be comfortable with who they are, and this is building towards their confidence.

  4. I have to agree with Jenine here in regards to Jessica Alba's quote. That is such a 'Hollywood' response to the word 'confidence', which I feel sends the completely opposite message. Looking confident and feeling confident are 2 completely different things. When I think about confidence, I naturally tie it to the word assurance. Confidence is more than just an attitude, or something we are told to be. To me, being confident means knowing who you are and what you stand for. If I am truly confident in myself, then I am confident in everything I do, not just how i look doing it. Confidence is very fragile. The smallest, negative incident can damage years worth of confidence building.
The reason why I have such a problem with Jessica Alba's quote is because confidence isn't how you look; it's how you feel. However, if you feel confident, you will naturally exude confidence. This, unfortunately, doesn't work the other way around.
At the Learning Stores, I feel like it is our duty to help nurture and encourage our students' confidence. By giving them this helping hand, they can slowly learn to walk confidently on their own. One day, they will only need one crutch to walk, and one day, they will need none. One day, they will be walking with their head held high, and they will know exactly who they are, what they stand for, and they will love the person they see in that mirror in ever way.
