Name it To Tame it

Name it to Tame It - Your Parenting Partner

Not sure where Dr. Jody Carrington got this phrase from, You Have to name it To Tame It,  but it sure works for Outreach in Alberta right now. ( I know now, Dan Seigel)

This Education department does not see the value of Outreach thus a reduction in funding. In speaking with Elliot Bessie the president of the OEC he notes many Outreaches are being converted to in reach. He is sending out a survey to Outreach schools to see how they have been affected by the cuts. So far he knows of 5 Outreaches being closed and 4 being turned into in reach. That is not counting our two. After the survey goes out there will be more data to look at.

We know this is cyclical. When High School principal's see that there is 1/10 of their population who are not returning or making their school climate less than favorable, Outreach will come to the rescue.

So Let's Name it To Tame It

Outta Reach
They Don't Care About At Risk Kids
Outreach Lives Don't Matter

Can you think of one? You have to name it to Tame it!

Grads- Grads need to know where they stand. Grads need to be completed 90% as of June 5th,  to be able to walk the stage. Luckily, we have pushed our grads so much that they are not in that worrying situation.

New material- We are in the process of converting to new materials. The Alberta Government has acknwledged and supported Golden Valley School diviison with their on line materials. I will distribute our password to access these materials. Always exciting to get access to more courses.

Student Contacts- PLEASE make contact, it will bite you in the butt if you don't make contact. The next contact you have may not be the one you want, police, Child Family Services or family. I say this from experience last week. It was a not nice, busy time last week. Our kids hit the wall last week. Maybe some of us did too. What we do know is that we are busier than ever, but it is a different putting out fires busy. The hrad to reach kids are hard but they are reachable, go find them and just see how they are.

Be Soft- Our encounters with our kids are soft, we do not know their story since they have been bound to home. Listen, ask the right questions. What have you been doing lately? What do you spend most of your time doing? How is everyone in your family handling things?

Counseling- We are still referring kids. We are letting kids know about the all hours help they can receive.

They also have an awesome website that young people can check out.  They service kids up to the age of 20 as they include those transitioning into secondary schools.

You- How are you doing? Are you helping yourself at this time? There are things we do in our lives to make things better or to make things worse. Music makes things better. Excercise makes things better.
Talking to other live humans in person makes things better.  Letting our brain rush with negative thoughts is not okay. A student explained that the our brain lies to us sometimes. We should not listen to our brain's negativity. When we recognize that, we can move forward. We will get you what you need just drop me an email, call me, text me. It is that easy.

Report cards- If you drop in a comment after markinga student's work then your report cards are done when it comes to report card time. I tried that in the third reporting period and I must say I liked the comments, they were relevant.
